During the Edo period, around the time of Tsunayoshi, the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa clan, bamboo was planted along the Ado River for flood control and fan making, and the fan-bone industry became popular as a side job during the off-season.
If the fan goes to Kyoto, it becomes a Kyo fan, and if it goes to Edo, it becomes an Edo fan, and it has spread all over the country.
Today, about 90% of fans nationwide are produced here in the Ado River.
