Yatate is a stationery used in Japan since the Kamakura period.
Designed as a combination of an inkwell and a brush case, it was made for easy writing on the battlefield, while traveling, and while peddling.
This piece was made at the end of the Edo period and is a wonderful gem with a silver handle and gold decorations.

矢立とは鎌倉時代から日本で用いられた文具であり、インク壺と筆入れが一緒になったデザインをしています。
戦場や旅先、行商中でも簡単に筆記が行うことができるように作られており、現代でも国会などの署名の際に使われているとのことです。
