Yatate is a stationery used in Japan since the Kamakura period.
Designed as a combination of an inkwell and a brush case, it was made for easy writing on the battlefield, while traveling, and while peddling.
This piece was produced around the end of the Edo period.
The design is simple and rugged, and the work is truly samurai-like.
The handle and inkwell are embedded with silver wirework, giving it a profound beauty.

矢立とは鎌倉時代から日本で用いられた文具であり、インク壺と筆入れが一緒になったデザインをしています。
戦場や旅先、行商中でも簡単に筆記が行うことができるように作られており、現代でも国会などの署名の際に使われているとのことです。
この作品は江戸の終り頃に制作され、シンプルで無骨なデザインは一種の静謐さを感じることができます。
