It is said that Emperor Onin climbed the rock face with a hook in ancient times. In the early Meiji period (1868-1912), a potter, Soshun, who was descended from Hiraga Gennai (Gennai ware), built a kiln at the foot of Kamikakeyama on Shodoshima island and started Kamikake-yaki pottery. Later, the potter Koetsu from Kutani in Kaga came to the island, revived the dying out of Kamikake-yaki and perfected his own unique glazes, resulting in a kind of unique pottery with elegance and robustness.
