5月5日は「こどもの日」として知られていますが、もともとは「男の子の日」のお祭りでした。
古代中国では、5月5日は5が2つあることから、この月は病気が流行り、トラブルが多いことから、災いをもたらすと言われていました。
そのため、菖蒲を飾り、菖蒲酒を飲んで厄除けや無病息災を祈りました。
武家では、男の子を祝う意味で鎧や刀を飾り、勇ましい子に育つようにと願った。
現在では、五月人形を飾ることが「男の子の節句を祝う方法のひとつ」とされています。

In ancient China, May 5 was said to bring misfortune because of the two fives in the month, as illnesses were prevalent and trouble was common during this month.
For this reason, people decorated irises and drank iris wine to ward off bad luck and pray for good health.
Samurai families decorated armor and swords as a way of celebrating boys, hoping that they would grow up to be brave and courageous.
Nowadays, decorating May dolls is considered "one of the ways to celebrate Boys' Festival.
