Genji Monogatari reduced folding screen

Tawaraya Sotatsu (birth and death unknown) is a painter who was active in Kyoto during the Keicho-Kanei period (1596-1644), and is known as the ancestor of the Rinpa school following Korin Ogata and Hoitsu Sakai. Sotatsu was supported by the wealthy upper townspeople and public houses in Kyoto, and in the spirit of the classical revival at that time, the aesthetic sense of the graceful dynasty was revived brilliantly. This work, which is based on the 14th book "Miotsukushi" and the 16th book "Sekiya" in "Genji Monogatari", is one of the three designated national treasures in Sotatsu's work. It is a masterpiece that fully conveys the charm of Sotatsu's paintings, such as a bold screen composition that uses straight lines and curves brilliantly, skillful coloring mainly in green and white, and quotations from old picture scrolls.
